Introduction to Red Dot Sights
Learn to effectively use a pistol-mounted red dot through a combination
of classroom instruction and practical live-fire training. This course
introduces students to the advantages of the red dot while developing
the fundamentals, awareness, and practical skills necessary to use the
system effectively.
Course Overview
Pistol-mounted red dot sights provide capabilities that extend beyond
simply replacing traditional iron sights. This course introduces
students to effective red dot use while demonstrating how the optic can
support greater visual awareness, positive identification, and practical
shooting performance.
Students will progress from classroom concepts and foundational skills
into live-fire drills and exercises designed to demonstrate the
advantages and limitations of the pistol-mounted red dot.
What You’ll Learn
Red Dot Fundamentals
Develop a working understanding of pistol-mounted red dot sights,
including presentation, dot acquisition, sight confirmation,
visual processing, and the fundamentals required to effectively
operate a red-dot-equipped handgun.
Positive Identification
Students will learn to utilize the advantages of enhanced awareness
and positive identification when focusing on the threat rather than
a front sight.
Practical Application
Students will take part in drills and exercises that identify the
advantages of the dot, including a culmination-of-skills final
exercise requiring positive identification of threats and
distinguishing other identifying characteristics.
Classroom to Range
Classroom Instruction
Students begin by developing an understanding of red dot concepts,
equipment, visual processing, and the principles that will be
applied during the live-fire portion of the course.
Live-Fire Training
Classroom concepts are reinforced on the range through progressive
drills and exercises that allow students to apply the red dot in
increasingly practical shooting problems.
Optional Low-Light Training
When offered with the course, students may participate in an optional
low-light training period that provides additional opportunities to
apply pistol and red dot skills under reduced-light conditions.
